Writing My First Ever Feature Film (06 The writing has started)

Challenges and obstacles whith taking the idea to the page.

The writing has officially started.

Hey guys, as the title says, I have officially started putting pen to paper. Well, I really just started today. The only thing I’ve done so far is to pass my outline into the beat board on Final Draft. But all the same, the real adventure has started. The reason why I decided to hop into actually writing it already instead of continuing to outline is, first and foremost, I have a deadline to meet for a revision of the first act of the film. But I also felt like I had plateaued in terms of the story. I feel like I am at a point where what I really need to be doing is truly getting to know these characters and how and why they act.

Where am I currently at?

As of right now, I have finished outlining. Contrary to what I told you in the last post, I didn't make an outline for the character arcs or the murder mystery. What I did was write a bunch on where my characters were at the beginning (how they see the world), which is also directly tied to my theme. In fact, it is directly tied because I am using these characters and the view that each has about the world to answer the larger thematic question. That is part of the reason why I haven't figured out the third act yet. I know what happens narratively, but up to a point. Because I myself don't know yet the answer to the questions I pose.

So right now, I am going to watch a few movies during the week to instruct my writing, such as Sicario, L.A Confidential, Insomnia, and Law Abiding Citizen. It is true that I still need to figure out the exact details when it comes to the murders and the clues. But right now, I am just trying to take one step after another. Also, as I said about the characters' relationship, I have a general idea of where it starts and where it ends. All that's left to figure out is how they get there. And there is no better way than to just write it out.

How am I approaching the challenges?

Right now, honestly, the biggest thing for me is to have a schedule and keep consistent. Because I don't have such a clear goal per se, as I did in the outlining steps. Right now, it is all about seeing how the ideas on the outline actually play out on the page. I know it is going to be a lot of trial and error. I am also aware that because I don't have a lot of info on how the crimes get committed, I am going to have to rewrite and add some clues and foreshadowing later on. But it's okay because right now, I am interested in getting time to write, see how the story and scenes actually flow together, how the characters interact, etc. I will fix the details later on.

So in conclusion, I don't have any particular goal, except to get the first 20-30 pages of the rough draft written in like a week or two. Which shouldn't be such an issue as I have a good idea of what sequences go where and what exactly happens in each one.

The most crucial thing is making sure I sit down and actually write, even if it is hot garbage.

I'll keep you posted.

I'll see you next week. So a bit of a more scattered post this week, as you can see I don't have such an exact step-by-step plan moving forward, but it is what it is. You need to jump into the pool at some point. So stay tuned because the fun is only just beginning. Thank you for reading.
